400Blows is the movie that I will discuss in the theme of the European film movement. It is the French movie directed by Truffaut, who is one of the famous director that makes many good films and drives French film industry in to success and individuality. This film is represented story of his life when he was young.

The story in this film is good and easy to understand because it is set to be a daily-life situation, so every sequence that happens in the story will be no complicated or complex scene. We can recognize that Antoine is the most stubborn boy and the troublemaker, who tries to make some problems in everything. But if we look in another way, he is just a teenage boy,who tries to discover something in his life. Every characters are non-professional actors, so they give a different feeling of acting in a good way, which is a natural feeling of human’s life. The setting ans the location are all real location, which is Paris. It is very beautiful and makes the movie looks real and believable as a real life situation.

Also the black and white of picture of this movie is very beautiful. I am not sure why and how it is different from other black and white movies in other part of the world, but I think it is more artistic, in terms of color, contrast ans smoothness. Many classic techniques are used in this film. The fist example is the scene that Antoine is investigated by some officer, which is quiet a song scene and uses a lot of dissolve. Another technique is a use of cut from one pale to another place in walking scene, which is still smooth even it is totally a different place.

Another point that makes me sort out easily that is a European style of the movie is that I cannot find genre for this film, but for me I will give it as a a European genre. It is quiet strange that the story cannot exactly put any standard genre into it because the story is not that stark to any genre, which also happens in many European films in present time, but we can feel the feeling of it easily that it is special and different from other films in part of the world.

Another horror movie which uses John Carpenter’s Halloween as its role model to evoke fear, Scream, is the second horror film that I am going to talk about. Personally, I still have to say that I am not a fan of horror movie and this movie I have to close my eyes sometimes when the scene that is too cruel appears (which is more cruel than Halloween much more). Although I cannot watch it normally like others, but I can see and find out that Scream is the horror film that uses many rules from Halloween.

Many things from Halloween appear in this film, including many horror movies that are used as the main reference to drives the story. The first example comes from the scream character that he is a big fan of horror movie and he uses his obsession as a game to play via phone call before killing begins. The second example is the scene when main characters and friends are watching Halloween and talks about the rules of horror film. It is a big reference that shows us the same consequence of the characters that die because they brake these rules. Another example is the main characters that talk about the movie a lot. They relates the movie as their life story, such as the couple talk about their relationship by using the rate of the movie, or the last sequence when Sidney kills the scream killer and says something about the ending of her movie will not be like that.

One thing that I think this movie is different from others is that it brakes one rule of Horror by the main character or the hero of film, which is Sidney. Most rule of the character is that she should not loose her pureness or virginity, otherwise she will die, but Sidney is different because she is still survive as a hero of the story, which brakes the rule and the main concept of horror film. It is something that is strange from most other horror films.

One of the classic horror movies that sets the rules and standard of thriller and horror movie in modern age, John Carpenter’s Halloween is the movie that I will discuss as the first example in the theme of horror movie. Firstly, I have to tell you that I am not a fan of horror movie and I do not like it very much, but Halloween is the movie that is not that scary. It might be frightening, but I can see it comfortably.

The first interesting point that I like about, comes from the opening scene that the camera is used to express the perspective that the killer sees by making the audiences become the killer themselves. I think this technique is very creative and cool by that time. It makes we feel like we are the killer that hide outside, looking at the victim , then walk into the house, grab the knife in the kitchen, and then kill his sister.

There are many things in this movie that becomes the rules of many horror movies in nowadays, but the point that I will talk about is that the movie has a lot of  situations that has the phone included in the scene because it is interesting and it becomes the main object in many horror movies. We can see that many mistakes happen because of the phone and it is the main cause of death. This proves that technology cannot help you every time, it can kill you also. There are many reactions of characters in the movie that dealing with the phone, which finally create different consequences. The first example which is the wrong use of the phone is Laurie’s friend that takes the phone off so finally she has to die. The second example is the pattern when the phone rings, Laurie has a phone call that has no speaker, which is quiet scary and makes us think that it is the killer for sure, and then the phone rings again, she receives the phone call that is now her friend.

The last thing that I will talk about is that the movie sets many rules in horror film industry, including the appearance of the killer that is usually black suit and white mask. In my opinion I think we already know that black is a symbol of darkness and mysterious and the mask symbolizes the killer that he hides himself inside, but why it has to be white? Personally, I think white might symbolizes emptiness, which means the killer has no mercy to kill someone because he thinks it is right thing to do.

One of the mass-media movies that still has a good  artistic feeling, The Terminator, is the movie that I think is good at movie techniques and also fun at the same time. The Terminator was one of science fiction movie that used many great techniques and special effects that were so great by that time to tell the story.

The first thing that I like about this movie is that the idea of using the true leading character of the story to be female or Sarah Corner as we know. The movie sets Sarah to be the legend or the key of everything in the story. She is the main reason why  terminator and Clyde have to go back in time. The one has to help her and another one has to kill her. I think it is great to show that sometimes science fiction movie that has a strong and violent theme does not have to use male role to presents the story. Female can also represent strength and courage of motherhood. For Sarah Corner, we can see that at first part of the story she looks like an ordinary woman. Although Sarah is not likely to be a hero for the first time, one thing that we can see is that she does not belong to the society anyway. Every time she tries to be a part of the society, she always fail. This is the special thing we can see before the development of this character begins. Finally, she is the real hero that kills the terminator and survives with her future inside, her son, John Corner.

Another point that I want to talk about is the difference between machine and human. As we know that human has emotion and feeling that machine dose not have. Machine only knows what it has to do. For this movie, it sets the machine to be the destroyer or the bad guy in the film, but if we look in a different perspective, what I think is that is the machine actually a bad guy? Because we all know that it just a machine does not have any feeling at all. It  is set up to do and finishes its job. It does not even know that its job is good or bad, it just has to do it and it can do very well. One thing that I think is, we cannot say that the only bad guy is only the machine, human is also the same, it is just in a different way op perspective because we are human.

The last thing that I like about this movie is, the way that movie uses special effects, which was so great by that time to  creat realistic in the movie. Although thsese effects were used long time ago, they were still look cool to me. Some of them I still do not know that it is not real for the first time before the teacher told me, such as Arnold scene.

One of the good movie that plays with the time, “Los cronocrímenes” or “Time Crimes” is one of the good example of science fiction movie that does not have to have a high budget to create special effects or some computer graphics, in order to make the movie perfectly believable magnificent.

What I like about this movie is the story that is set up to be infinity or some kind of a chain reaction. This movie uses good sound effects and set ups that give me a sense of horror movie, which makes the movie looks more mysterious. I think the sound in this movie it very nice and spooky because it makes me feel scared and frightened all along with the story. The more I feel frightened and sacred, the more I want to know what is going to happen.

The character seems to be an innocent at the first place, but then you will get to know more and more that he is the one who makes those situations happened. Hector looks like an idiot at the first place, then he looks more weird and scary. Same as the story that is getting to be more mysterious and scary because we know the sequence and what Hector has done. The entire story tells us that, finally, everything happens because of him, not others. He is the real villain who does these bad things and creates himself as a killer.

The ending tells us that this story will have no ending. It is nice to end the story like this. The story shows us that it will still continue and we will never know how the ending will be. We only know that the situation will repeat agin and agin for sure, but after that, it is beyond our imagination.

Another Don Siegel movie that presents violence and crime, but in the different perspective. This movie tells the story by using criminal vision, Charley Varrick. The scene that everyone will notice about, is the opening scene of this movie. It is the bank rob scene that use members of the gang to wear some kind of masks, which are exactly the same as criminal masks in The Dark Knight. Also the bank rob scene is so similar to each other. It proves that  this movie is a great inspiration for later crime movies.

Another point that I like is the ending of this film. It may be a bit boring if it uses in the films today, but at that time, it looks excited. I think it is new for that time because the character uses the plane in the chasing scene. The picture and the shots in this scene looks great by the camera shots and movements. The last sequence, which I think it is very classic is shirt with Charley Varrick’s name burns. This sequence appears two times, at the beginning and at the end, which I think it gives different meanings. At the beginning,  I feels that it wants to show that this person has something and he is not a good guy, but when I see the entire movie and I know what happens before the shirt is burning in the fire, it gives another meaning. I think it tells us that he finishes his job and now he changes. He leaves the past behind by throwing his shirt away into the fire.

Charley Varrick represents hero in a different way, which means he is not a hero at all, but this story makes him to be a hero. In my opinion, the character drives the story and makes himself looks like a hero. He is intelligent and very tricky. He always know how to escape and puts himself out of trouble. He is a very smart and good-looking, just like a hero.

“If you do good, you will get a good thing”, this sentence maybe cannot use in this movie. Dirty Harry by Don Siegel, starring by Clint Eastwood shows us that being a good person, sometimes doesn’t make any good at all.

For me, the movie has a good plot and story. It tells us a story of police officer, Harry Callahan, who is a very good, honest, and courage man. He tries to do everything to protect justice of the city. He is a real hero character. He gets rid of criminals, protects people and saves women and children.But, everything finally ends because of the serial killer named “Scorpio”. Scorpio makes Harry’s moral become more useless in every time he tries to catch this criminal.

It shows us the weak point of police and law system of San Francisco. The opening scene of this movie seems to be an ironic sequence. It is a scene that shows the name of police officers who sacrificed themselves and died in their duties. This scene makes me think about the entire story that finally, the police system all over the world is still the same. It protects criminals and destroys good people.

I think for this story, I cannot talk much about the techniques that are used because I cannot see much of them. One thing that I still  recognize is the color of blood, which is so fake and funny, but it is because it is an old movie, so it is not important to talk about. One thing that I think they are good for that time are some stunt scenes that Harry does in the movie. The jumping scene, crane scene are very good because Clint played these scene by himself without any stunt. I think this is very cool.

Western movie by Clint Eastwood is perfectly tells the whole picture and story that are enjoyable. This might be a slow-pace movie, but the sequence of the story is interesting to follow, such as the character himself and the event that is going to happen because of the decision making by the main character.

The character, Will, represents himself as a contemporary western hero. Some of his characteristic might be the same as the old western hero should be. He comes out the last person in the movie. He speaks less then anyone else. He refuses money and woman, when she offers herself to him as the reward for helping her, or he does want to help, just because the villain was hurting a woman. He seems to be a good old man. But, Will also has something in the bad side that he used to be, before he changes into a good person, but finally, his past comes out anyway

Another point that I like in this movie is, the light and the color tone of the movie are very beautiful. It shows up the feeling of the western movie should be. For example, the long shot scene of the sunlight and sunset at Will’s house are very nice and lonely.

Personally, I think the name “Unforgiven” can be meant into two things. The first thing that should be unforgiven is the thing that the bad guys have done with the woman. It is too cruel and bad for Will to forgive. That is the reason why he accepts the word and goes to help her. Another thing that is unforgiven is, the past of  Will. We can see that although he has changed to be a good person, but something that he has done in the past is too bad to be forgiven.

Scary, terrify and disgusting may be first three words that I would like to say for this Indonesian thriller movie because I am a fearful person. But, this movie has something to recognize more than just these three things. The movie is pretty scary and disgusting, in terms of how cruel the main character has done  and the story of the movie itself, but in terms of conflict and substance inside the movie is pretty interesting.

The movie is the story of sculpture artist that is very successful. One thing that is different is because he only creates sculptures of pregnant women. He thought pregnant women have something more special than others because they have babies, which are precious gifts. His life is going very well. He is successful, rich and famous, big house and beautiful good wife. Everything seems to look normal and happy, but everything changes when his wife gets pregnant and decides to abort her child. Everything goes OK, but it is not that OK when she wants her husband to put her infant into the pregnant sculptures as her gift. Everything turns into a long creepy story.

The main character of this movie moves the story and makes it more excited and follow. At first, I think  he is a normal good person, but his wife is not because the movie creates the situation of the wife character to make her looks very cruel and weird because she decides to go abortion and the man is very sad, feels disagree about this and cries. But after that everything completely changes because of the pregnant sculpture with the real infant inside, and also the better things that man tries to do, the worse person he turns to be. All the truth inside this main character comes out slowly and more clearly. One important thing that I can see is, the more he tries to help the little boy, who was brutal by his parents, the more he see the truth inside himself that he is actually that little boy.

One thing that I think it is the reason why I am not so scared and keep thinking about those creepy scenes is because this movie presents still itself to be some kind of traditional thriller movie. The movie is clearly sets up the normal scenes and scary scenes separately. I still could know  what is going to happen because I can hear the changes of sound and also the changes of  light tone that gets darker, so it is very easy for me to prepare myself to close my eyes.

I think the “Forbidden Door” can be interpreted in many different meanings. But in my opinion, I think it means that something that you should keep it as a secret forever because if we let this secret comes out from that door and it makes yourself turns to be worst and destroys everything in your life, why should we just leave it right there and make it as a secret forever? because everyone can have a secret, but it depends how bad it is.
